Compost Center

The City of Marshall operates a compost site for use by Marshall City residents, surrounding townships residents, and local contractors. Users of the site will be asked to present identification confirming authorization to use the center at each visit.

  • Site Hours: Tuesdays 3 pm to 6 pm; & Fridays and Saturdays 9 am to 3 pm
  • 2025 Operational Dates: April 8 through November 15
  • Scheduled Closure Dates: None

Items NOT ACCEPTED at the Compost Site:

  • Construction Materials
  • Plastics
  • Stumps
  • Concrete
  • Food Wastewater
  • Other items at the discretion of the City

Material Available for Pickup

A punch card is required to pickup the following materials:
  • Composted Material for personal use
  • Wood Chips for personal use

residential use information

Resident within the City of Marshall or the four surrounding townships are required to purchase a punch card to use at the Compost Site. No payment is accepted on site. There are two card options for residents:

  1. $20 City Resident/ $40 surrounding township residents- punch card which will provide 10 visits to the compost site. Multiple punch cards may be purchased. Unused punches carryover to the next year.
  2. $30 City Resident/ $60 surrounding township residents- Annual card allows you to visit the site as many times as you wish during the annual season.
    • Visitors must present your Picture ID showing residency and punch card to the attendant when you visit the Compost Site.
    • Punch cards will be punched for every visit to the site, even for multiple visits on the same day.
    • Punch cards can be purchased at City Hall during normal business hours.
    • The city will not replace any lost cards.
    • Surrounding townships include Marshall, Eckford, Fredonia, and Marengo.

contractor use information

Contractors with a business address within the 49068 zip code can purchase a punch card for use of the City compost center. The punch card will provide 10 visits to the compost site. Multiple punch cards may be purchased. The contractor punch card cost $200 per card.

    • One punch per load of material brought to the center
    • One punch per load of material taken from the center
    • Contractors must load their own material out of the compost center
    • Individuals bringing material using contractor punch cards must have proof of business to accompany the punch card
    • The materials brought to compost by the contractor must come from the City of Marshall or four surrounding townships as allowed in the standard compost rules
    • The city will not replace any lost cards

Contractor Insurance: 

The organization using the contractor punch card system shall provide evidence of liability insurance in the amount of $300,000 and shall name the City of Marshall as an additional insured on the certificate of insurance. Evidence of insurance must be provided before the banner is approved and placed.
